Tag Questions

1 | How much do you spend on makeup a month? A year?

In 2019, my beauty spending was abnormally high. Shopping became an addictive coping mechanism for dealing with stress.  Given that I am actively working to spend less, I will not be sharing exact spend numbers.

2 | Do you ever feel guilty about how much you spend on makeup?

Hell yes. If you want to keep up with my excessive purchases and my constant guilt, check out my 2019 Low Buy Series. Obviously, I failed at my Low Buy in 2019.

3 | Do you get ‘FOMO’ related to makeup releases?

I experience FOMO when I am unable to purchase certain limited-edition releases. When the Gemini Palette originally sold out, I experienced major FOMO and even tried to dupe the palette.

In 2019, when the Kylie Cosmetics holiday palette sold out within a few hours of releasing I felt regret that I didn’t ‘jump’ to buy it. However, as time passed, I realized that the hype surrounding the palette would quickly fade away.

4 | DO you purchase or keep items simply because they are limited edition?

I do not purchase items or keep them simply because they are limited edition. A collection has to appeal to me in order for me to purchase it.

However, I have mixed feelings on Limited Edition Beauty releases. False scarcity tactics used to con buyers into purchasing otherwise boring releases should be illegal.

Limited Edition releases fuel my impulse purchases and cause me to buy items with speed. Rational thinking is difficult when these release drop without warning.

5 | Would you be willing to pay more money for a sold-out product online?

Yes and no. Obviously, I paid more for the Pat McGrath Nocturnal Nirvana Blitz Astral Quad because mine was removed from my order. However, I only paid more for shipping. The actual quad sold at the same retail price.

It infuriates me when resellers buy products for the SOLE purpose of hiking up the price and reselling the products at extortion-level prices. Not only do true fans miss out on the initial launch, but then they are punished if they pay high fees charged by the resellers.

6 | Do you wish you could spend more? Or less?

In theory, I wished I spent less because my purchases fill me with guilt. However, a part of me wishes I made enough money to spend without guilt.

7 | Do you feel compelled to buy something when you see it in someone else’s collection?

Yes – Instagram, YouTube, and other bloggers all fuel my desire to buy more beauty products.

8 | Do you buy more during the holidays?

I buy more for others and for myself during the holidays. In regards to my friends and family, I feel joy giving them gifts that I know they’ll love. In regards to myself, the sales get under my skin and always lead me to spend more.

9 | Have you ever hidden a makeup purchase from family or friends?

I hid makeup purchases from family during 2019. During some of the major sales periods, I shipped packages to my boyfriend’s house.

10 | Do you have more than ten products in your collection that you have not used in over a month?

I have way more than 10 products that I haven’t used in over a month. Despite owning and loving so much in my collection, I only have one face.

11 | Have you ever been pressured to purchase something you could not afford or did not need?

Family and friends never pressure me to purchase anything. They actually encourage me to spend less! However, as previously stated, I feel pressure from social media and from brands who launch limited edition products.

12 | Do you purchase makeup for collector reasons?

I do not purchase makeup to ‘collect’ it. If I do not like it, I won’t buy it.

13 | In your makeup journey have you become less or more consumeristic?

On my makeup journey, I became more consumeristic. However, I am also more self-aware.

By trying so many formulas and brands, I know what I like and dislike in terms of textures, formulas, and branding. Moreover, I take the time to think critically about more of my recent purchases as a result of analyzing my behavior.

Final Thoughts on the Beauty Consumer Tag

The Beauty Consumer Tag was an interesting YouTube tag that I discovered in 2019 from my fave, Smokey Glow. As soon as I saw the questions in the Beauty Consumer Tag, I knew I had to take part in it. On this blog, I love to chronicle and analyze my spending habits.

In answering the Beauty Consumer Tag questions, the first question impacted me the most. Although I keep a meticulous beauty inventory spreadsheet, I my monthly spend breakdown for last year surprised me. I never want to spend most of my discretionary income on beauty products.
