After I saw one of my favorite YouTubers, Smokey Glow, do this tag, I knew the Boujee Beauty Guru Tag would be a fun way for me to analyze my purchasing habits. What does the word, ‘Boujee’ mean?
According to Urban Dictionary, Boujee is a slang term that is a play on the French word Bourgeois to describe high class or expensive places, people, or things. Often times it describes people who possess many expensive items.

Originally originated on YouTube as the Boujee Beauty Guru Tag and was created by Agapelovegirl. This tag was meant to be a fun tag for beauty influencers to analyze their shopping habits to determine whether or not he or she was a “boujee” makeup buyer.

1 | Would you rather buy one expensive/luxury item or buy several items with the same amount of money?
If you asked me this question three or four years ago, I would have likely said that I would rather buy several items over one expensive, luxury item. I love a bargain – especially at the drugstore!
At this point in my life, I’d rather pay more for a luxury product that I’m fully obsessed with rather than a few products that I like less. However, price or “status” does not determine how much I want to buy something.
2 | When it comes to beauty products, do you believe the phrase “you get what you pay for”?
No. I’ve bought luxury products that performed horribly and I purchased drugstore products that were total favorites and vice versa. Price should not determine quality, but the price influences the experience.
Luxury products often evoke an experience or a luxurious feeling that sparks joy. While affordable products may not feel like as much of an experience, they can perform just as well.
3 | What’s the most expensive beauty item you’ve purchased with your own money?
At $90.00, the Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos is the most expensive skincare item that I’ve purchased with my own money. I’ve repurchased this twice and would certainly be willing to purchase it again.
Makeup-wise, I own four full-size Pat McGrath Palettes – The Mothership I, Mothership IV (sold out), Mothership VII (sold out), and Mothership VII. These palettes retail for $125.00. Let that sink in.
4 | Are you willing to buy products at full price or do you usually wait for a sale or discount code?
I am willing to buy products at full price, for brands that do not go on sale often. Alternatively, some beauty brands are so heavily reliant on frequent promotions that I rarely purchase their products at full price. Often times it is the affordable brands and mid-tier prestige brands that fall into the heavily discounted category.
5 | Where do you shop for beauty products the most?
Sephora. I don’t care that Ulta has more promotions than Sephora or that Ulta’s reward system is often heralded as better. Sephora’s branding, product expertise, and innovation in the beauty space are unparalleled. Plus, Sephora sells many luxury brands that other retailers do not carry,
6 | How often do you get your nails and/or hair done?
I rarely get my hair or nails done. At most, I get my hair cut 3-4 times a year. The only times I received a manicure or pedicure were when someone else was treating.
In 2019, I did not get my hair cut once (yikes!) nor did I get a manicure or pedicure. Instead, I trimmed my own split ends and painted my own nails.
7 | Do you prefer long or short nails?
I prefer to have long nails, but I typically keep short nails. As someone with poor vision who wears contacts, long nails scare me. Long nails make it harder to put in and take out contact lenses.
8 | Which makeup brush brand is your favorite?
Luxie makes my favorite makeup brushes, but I enjoy brushes made by ecoTools, realTechniques, and Sephora, too.
9 | High end or drug store mascara?
I used to be an avid drugstore mascara girl. Over the years I’ve found myself drawn more to prestige mascaras. See my huge collection here.
10 | Think of your favorite makeup brand, is it Drugstore, High End, Luxury or Indie?
At this point, I’m not sure that I have a favorite brand. I enjoy different brands for different products. For example, my favorite foundation is from Urban Decay. My favorite shadows are from Huda Beauty and ColourPop. Meanwhile, my favorite blushes are made by CoverFX.
11 | Considering your answers to these questions, do you think you’re boujee?
I’m not boujee but I’m boujee adjacent. I have no problem dropping a ton of money on a singular makeup item. However, I know that price does not determine quality. As such, I shop more affordable brands frequently.

Final Thoughts on the Boujee Beauty Guru Tag
If I were to go off of the amount of money I spend in a calendar year on beauty products then I am boujee. I spend way more on beauty items than any one person should. However, from a product price perspective, I am not a snob. Quality is not determined by the price.
My collection reflects a true love of makeup. I own everything from super affordable drugstore brands to indie brands, prestige and luxury beauty. When it comes to products, I don’t discriminate.
Do I spend more on indie, prestige, and luxury items than drugstore items? Sure. However, I do not exclusively shop for high-end products.
