Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette Review August 15, 2019
The Huda Beauty Obsession Eyeshadow Palettes are curated 9-Pan palettes that come in a variety of color stories, from neutrals, nudes, jewel tones, and neons. Given how quickly the range expanded since launching in 2017, I needed to know if these micro palettes were worth the hype. Keep reading for an in depth review of the Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette.
Huda Beauty Brand Ethos
Huda Beauty was founded by beauty influencer Huda Kattan and her two sisters, Alya and Mona Kattan, in 2013. Huda first launched lashes. However, she quickly expanded into color cosmetics and skincare.
What is Your Obsession?
The Huda Beauty Obsession Palettes remain one of the biggest eyeshadow collection launches of the last few years. The original 9-Pan Obsessions Palettes launched in 2017. The goal behind this palettes was to enable beauty-lovers to create complete day-to-night looks within specific color families.
After the success of the original launch, Huda Beauty expanded its range to include five gemstone-themed palettes, three neon palettes, and three nude palettes. This collection spawned countless copycats in the industry.
Huda Beauty Smokey Obsession Palette Claims
Huda Beauty promises that the Smokey Obsession Palette will enable wearers to create “the ultimate smokey eye or staple nude look” with the palette’s mix of easily buildable colors.

Is the Smokey Obsessions Palette worth the hype?
Price & Packaging
The Obsessions Palettes look larger in photographs than they are in real life. Each palette is palm-sized. They are easy to store and easy to pack for travel.
Also, the Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette is made of cardboard encased in a plastic sleeve. Also, this palette comes with a small compact mirror.
Each Obsessions Palette retails for $27.00-$29.00.
Ingredients & Cruelty-Free Status
The Huda Obsession Palettes are Paraben-Free, but the matte shades contain Talc.
Additionally, Huda Beauty’s Cruelty-Free status is murky. The brand sells mink lashes. However, the cosmetic products are not tested on animals.
Huda Beauty Smokey Obsession Palette Swatches
Although swatches are not a perfect indicator of quality, they can provide a clue to how an eyeshadow will blend. Please see the below for finger swatches of the Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette.

Huda Beauty Smokey Obsession Palette Swatches
The Smokey Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette comes with four matte eyeshadows and five metallic shadows. Overall, the formula of these shadows is soft. This palette is messy and each shadow produces a considerable amount of fallout.
Despite the above flaws, Huda masterfully curated a smokey palette that includes a variety of tones and textures. My only real complaint is that the two dark matte brown shades look similar on the eyes. I wish one of these shades was a mid-tone brown.
Palette Application & Wear-time
The shadows in the Smokey Obsessions palette can be easily applied with a brush or finger. The matte shades blend seamlessly. The three dark matte shades are pigmented, so a little product goes a long way.
However, the shadows are prone to crumbling. Also, the matte shades produce fallout. Wearers should apply these shadows before base makeup. The metallic shades are best applied using a fingertip or a wet brush.
When worn over a primer, the shadows last all day without creasing, smudging, or fading. I am able to create a wide range of beautiful, pigmented, smokey looks.
Where can you purchase the Smokey Obsession Palette?
The Huda Beauty Obsessions Palettes are sold internationally on Huda Beauty’s website, at Sephora in the U.S., and Cult Beauty in the U.K.. However, the Smokey Obsessions Palette is sold out nearly everywhere.

Final Thoughts on the Huda Beauty Smokey Obsession Palette
Despite the messy shadow formula, the Huda Beauty Smokey Obsession Palette impressed me. Each shadow is buttery and pigmented.
Moreover, the pocket-sized palette is easy to travel with and easy to store. I recommend this palette to anyone looking for a curated palette to create the perfect smokey eye.
However, I do not recommend the Smokey Obsessions to anyone who is bothered by fallout or messy packaging. If the formula seems unappealing, try the Milani Soft & Sultry Eyeshadow Palette.

I really liked this palette but in all honesty I think it was overpriced for the amount of eyeshadow you get.
Fair enough – I don’t work through a ton of shadows since I own so much, so I don’t mind that this has less product in it. In some ways I kinda like it because it makes finishing it more feasible for me, but I do love the quality!
Yeah that makes sense but I just have a couple of palettes so it’s the opposite for me lol!
I love the Huda Beauty palettes! I feel like people are turned off by how small they are, but I find the amount of pigment they pack makes up for it (plus I think they’re mostly just packed more efficiently than other palettes). The cohesiveness of the colours is always so great, one palette is all you need for so many looks!!
OMG yes – I’m so glad you said this because I think people are fooled by the packaging. I 100% agree that the pan sizes aren’t super small, but it is just that the packaging is minimal compared to what we’re normally used to seeing in the beauty world!
It sounds like even though these were messy they were worth it. I think the messiness would bug me, so I appreciate the info on the dupe. Lovely thoughts on this, LP.
Totally fair since because this particular palette has been known to have shades that shatter! The Milani one is a nice alternative for sure!
I don’t really mind fallout etc as long as the shadows apply well and look good throughout the day on my eyelid! A messy palette is annoying but it’s a small price to pay for a good eyeshadow formula. Great review! x
I feel the same way – if the shadow lasts on my lid and doesn’t slip around throughout the day, then I don’t mind some fall out.
Great post 🙂
I love these mini obsession palettes! The silver in this Smokey palette is just beautiful!
Me too – I like how they’re easy to store and have such a curated color scheme, but versatile. 😀
I love Huda and I really wanna try a lot of stuff from her brand!
Me too – girl! I love her shadows, but I want to try some of her bullet lipsticks.
I love stalking her Instagram! Her persons all one not her brand one, it’s sooooooo much fun!
This palette looked much better than I was expecting. At a glance, I thought it looked quite boring, but your swatches convinced me otherwise. I love the silver shade the most – it’s so pretty. I bet you can create some beautiful looks with this palette! Thanks for sharing girl x
This palette was a favorite of mine the last time I travelled because the colors are quite versatile even though they’re neutral shades and the pigmentation is AMAZING. 😀
I actually didn’t know the price of the palette before this post but I’ve heard alot about it. I would say it is probably a little over priced for the product amount that you get. The swatches look so pigmented though which is amazing and so definitely worth it if they look that good x

For me, I’m not bothered by the size because the actual pan sizes are like those of a normal 12 or 14 pan palette and the shadows perform well on the eyes!
I love how bold and pigmented these colours are, even if there is some fall out to overlook. I might just have to give it a try!
Me too – it is a very lovely palette and I love the color scheme!
What a fantastic well written and in depth review! I do really like the look of this palette but feel a dark smokey look is definitely not my everyday so likely I wouldn’t get the use out of it. I have the mauve obsessions from the original set that launched and I do really like it. The size made me think it would be good for travel but due to the packaging and some of the really soft shimmery shades it gets really messy unfortunately! xxx
ahhhhh thank you, girl. I love smokey looks like this, but totally fair to say that it isn’t your color scheme and it is def a little messy, but I do love the pigmentation. 😀
The colors are pretty! Great for a smokey eye for sure. I’ve only tried lashes and lip products from Huda Beauty but I do want to venture out into their eyeshadow palettes.
That’s so interesting – I’m the opposite! I’ve never tried her lashes or lips, but want to!! Have you tried her bullet Lipsticks? Those intrigue me the most 😀
Thanks for such an honest review! You never know until you try these products. I have yet to try these pallets, but so thankful for reviews like yours first, before purchasing.
So glad you found this review helpful! 💜
Fall out is super annoying but this palette looks great. Some really lovely shades x
Liked the palette and the colors look amazing! Do check my page too
This is such a lovely, versatile palette for every day looks and total evening glam. ☺️
Oh my gosh, I thought I was doing something wrong because I was a mess using my Huda Obsessions palette. The shimmer shaded created so much fallout in their pans & all over my face so it’s nice to know you had the same problems. I do agree the formula is soft, easy to blend, very pigmented & long-lasting though! For $27, it’s really worth it, in my opinion. The pocket size is perfect, too!
I agree for sure – def a messy palette but worth it when it comes to how it applies on the eye. I finally purchased one of the larger Huda Palettes so I’m excited to see how I like it compared to this formula. ☺️
You’re right, the way it applies & how long it lasts is worth the mess. 🙂 Can’t wait to see which palette you bought & your thoughts on it!
