As part two of my Empties Review series, I will be sharing my thoughts on the cosmetic items that I finished this year. Between haircare, skincare, and makeup, I’ve finished the least amount of color cosmetic products.
During the first part of this year, I’ve finished 12 products – a mix of lip, eye, and skin products. Please keep reading for my thoughts on my Mid-Year Makeup Empties 2018.
Mid-Year Makeup Empties 2018 Roundup
Please keep reading for mini reviews of my mid-year makeup empties 2018 products. After finishing these products, I’ve gotten to know these items well.
Aquaphor – Healing Ointment (Chapstick)
I have no strong feelings about the Aquaphor Healing Ointment, which I use as a chapstick. The product is hydrating. It helped to keep my dry lips from getting chapped during the cold winter, However, this product is essentially petroleum jelly. Glamglow – Poutmud Wet Lip Balm
The Glamglow Poutmud Wet Lip Balm was surprisingly awesome. I received this product as part of a Glamglow lip gift set that I almost gave the kit away. The Wet Lip Balm is exactly what it says it is – a lip balm that is intensely hydrating that gives your lips the appearance of looking like wet glass.
Chapstick – Gingerbread Kiss Chapstick
I received the Gingerbread Kiss chapstick in my stocking two Christmases ago. The product itself was great as a daily chapstick. My lips felt soft and hydrated while using this balm, but the smell was nauseating.
Buxom – Full-On Lip Polish in Dolly
Buxom’s Full-On Lip Polish is the first full-size lip gloss I have ever finished. I enjoyed the formula because of the plumping effect that it had on my lips. When I was first using gloss, I noticed a slight tingling effect on the lips, but as I wore this gloss more, I became accustomed to the sensation.
The formula to be high shine, and it plays well with other products. I could easily layer this on top of other colors, regardless of the shade without causing the lip product (pencil, lipstick, etc) to become patchy. However, be warned that this is a very sticky gloss. There were quite a few incidents during my morning commute when my hair got stuck to the gloss when the winds whipped through the air.
Urban Decay – 24/7 Glide on Eye Pencil in Plushe
My favorite trait of the 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil is the creaminess of the formula. The color Plushe is quite pigmented, but I thought it leaned more purple than navy when applied to the eyes. Overall, I tend to buy more drug-store eyeliners because I don’t see a big enough difference in the performance of high-end eyeliners to justify continued purchases.
Sephora – Contour Eye Pencil 24 Hour Wear Mini in 33 Love Affair
The Sephora Collection Contour Eye Pencils are hidden gems. I’ve used several different color variations of this eyeliner and have found that the formula is always very pigmented and stays in place all day. Love Affair is a beautiful shimmery plum formula.
Kat Von D – Tattoo Liner Mini
The Kat Von D Tattoo Liner is my favorite liquid liner. The brush tip applicator makes application easy. The formula is opaque black and does not bleed, crack, or smudge once applied. Additionally, the liner dries down quickly. The eyeliner stays in place all day without smudging or fading.
Urban Decay – Naked Skin Foundation (1.5 Fair Bisque)
This foundation was originally recommended to me in 2016 when I was attempting to wean myself off full coverage foundation. At the time, I felt scared to try this formula because it was much lighter coverage than I was used to wearing, so I chose to try the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation instead. After dissatisfaction with the Too Faced foundation and not wanting to go back to a full coverage foundation, I purchased the Naked Skin Foundation.
Out of all the high-end foundations I’ve owned, Fair Bisque is one of the closest shade matches I have found. The Maybelline Fit Me 120 is also quite close to my skin color, but many other foundations I’ve used are either a smidgen too light or dark, or are too yellow or pink toned. My undertone is quite neutral but sometimes leans pink due to old discoloration from acne scars.
The Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Foundation is extremely watery and lightweight. The foundation sets down fairly quickly, but individuals with oily skin should still set their faces with a powder or spray for increased longevity. After a long day, my skin will certainly be oily, but I don’t find that the formula cracks as my face gets shiny.
The Naked Skin foundation is light to medium coverage depending on how much product is applied to the face. Application with a dense brush provides the most coverage, but I like how the formula blends seamlessly into the skin when using a sponge. When I talk about this foundation I like to say it is “my skin but better.” Discoloration and acne will peak through, but the foundation gives my skin a much more balanced appearance.
I will caution anyone with “older” skin against using this foundation because it can settle into fine lines and wrinkles.
Make Up For Ever – Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer (Travel Size)
The Make Up Forever Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer is an okay base. I don’t have strong feelings about this product. The primer mattified my face but was not long lasting. I saw no visible difference at the end of the day when wearing this primer compared to other bases that have a more natural or dewy finish. However, this primer does play well with other products and does not clog pores.
Final Thoughts on my Mid-Year Makeup Empties 2018 Roundup
Unsurprisingly, my mid-year makeup empties 2018 roundup was the smallest of my empties updates this year. Color cosmetics are much harder to work through than skincare or haircare. Even if makeup is worn daily, it is rare for me to wear the same exact makeup daily.
The bulk of my mid-year makeup empties 2018 product roundup were color cosmetics products that I do use with regularity. I am much more inclined to use the same eye liners daily as opposed to the same eyeshadows.
