Bad or Rad | Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette Review, Swatches, and Demo

The Huda Beauty Obsessions Palettes remain one of the biggest eyeshadow collection launches of the last two years. The original 9-Pan Obsessions Palettes launched in 2017 with the goal of enabling beauty-lovers to create complete day-to-night eyeshadow looks curated within specific color families.

After the success of the original launch, Huda Beauty expanded its range to include five gemstone-themed limited edition palettes. The launch of the Gemstone Obsessions Palettes ushered in a trend for cohesive, curated colorful eyeshadow palettes.

Admittedly, I nearly bought the Sapphire and Amethyst Obsessions Palettes in 2018 but stopped after the lackluster swatches I experienced while playing with tester palettes in Sephora. Nevertheless, the monotone, colorful palettes continued to call out to me. I wanted to see if the palettes actually were worth the hype, so I decided to grab the Smokey Obsessions Palette this past holiday season. Please keep reading for my thoughts on this palette.

Huda Beauty Brand Ethos

Huda Beauty was founded by beauty influencer Huda Kattan and her two sisters, Alya and Mona Kattan in 2013. Huda first launched glamorous lashes, but quickly expanded into color cosmetics.

Smokey Obsessions Product Claims

Huda Beauty promises that the Smokey Obsession Palette will enable wearers to create “the ultimate smokey eye or staple nude look” with the palette’s mix of easily buildable colors.

Is the Smokey Obsessions Palette worth the hype?

Price & Packaging

The Huda Beauty Obsessions Palettes look significantly larger in photographs than they are in real life. Each palette in this collection is palm-sized, which makes this easy to store and easy to pack when traveling.

Material-wise, the Smokey Obsessions Palette is made of a sturdy cardboard material that is encased in a plastic sleeve. Although it may be tempting to throw out the plastic sleeve, I recommend keeping it to ensure the palette remains closed during travel. This palette comes with a small compact mirror.

Each Obsessions Palette retails for $27.00 USD.

Ingredients & CF Status

Although I appreciate that the Huda Obsessions Palettes are Paraben-Free, I want to call out that the matte shades do contain Talc (as the number one ingredient). Huda Beauty’s Cruelty-Free status is murky given that the brand does sell mink lashes. However, cosmetic products are not tested on animals.

Eyeshadow Swatches

Due to the nature of the Smokey Obsession Palette formula, I opted to only show finger swatches after attempting to do brush swatches. The shadows swatched so poorly with a brush, which I knew was not indicative of how the shadows applied on the eye.

The Smokey Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette comes with four matte eyeshadows and five metallic shimmer shadows. Overall, the formula of these shadows is incredibly soft. For comparison, these shadows make Anastasia Beverly Hills’ formula seem stiff. As a result, this palette is incredibly messy and each shadow produces a considerable amount of fallout.

From a color selection standpoint, Huda did a wonderful job in curating a cohesive smokey palette with a great variety of tones and textures. My only complaint with the color selection is the similarity between the two dark matte brown shades in the bottom row of the palette. I wish one of these shades was swapped for a lighter, mid-tone brown.

Application & Wear-time

The shadows in the Smokey Obsessions palette can be easily applied with a dry brush, wet brush, or finger. The matte shades blend out seamlessly in the crease and outer-V of the eyelid. The three dark matte shades are particularly pigmented, so a little product goes a long way. The metallic shades are best applied using a fingertip or a wet brush.

As briefly mentioned above, the shadows are soft, prone to crumbling, and producing fallout. For this reason, wearers should apply these shadows before applying any base makeup. Moreover, the soft shadow formula creates a mess in the pan and gives the illusion that it would be easy to hit pan.

Nevertheless, these shadows last all day without creasing, smudging, or fading (when worn over a primer). Additionally, due to the shade variety, I am able to create a wide range of beautiful, pigmented, smokey looks.

Retail Distribution

The Huda Beauty Obsessions Palettes are sold internationally on Huda Beauty’s website, at Sephora in the U.S., and Cult Beauty in the U.K. The Warm Brown, Mauve, Smokey, and Coral Obsessions palettes are permanent palettes, while the Gemstone Obsessions Palettes (Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, and Topaz) are limited edition.

Final Thoughts

Despite the soft and messy shadow formula, the Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette impressed me. Each shadow in the palette is buttery and pigmented – a rarity in today’s beauty market. This palette is like the bolder, slightly edgier older sister to the Milani Soft & Sultry Eyeshadow Palette.ย The pocket-sized palette is easy to travel with and easy to store. Also, the $27.00 USD retail price makes this palette a great steal. After trying this palette, I am eager to try more Obsessions Palettes from the brand.

Although I loved this palette, I would not recommend the Smokey Obsessions to anyone who is bothered by fallout or by messy packaging. If the price is too high or the Huda formula looks unappealing, try the Milani Soft & Sultry Eyeshadow Palette instead. The Milani Soft & Sultry Eyeshadow Palette is this is a comparable, affordable dupe (retail value $14.97 USD – $19.99 USD).

    1. Fair enough – I don’t work through a ton of shadows since I own so much, so I don’t mind that this has less product in it. In some ways I kinda like it because it makes finishing it more feasible for me, but I do love the quality!

  1. I love the Huda Beauty palettes! I feel like people are turned off by how small they are, but I find the amount of pigment they pack makes up for it (plus I think they’re mostly just packed more efficiently than other palettes). The cohesiveness of the colours is always so great, one palette is all you need for so many looks!!

    1. OMG yes – I’m so glad you said this because I think people are fooled by the packaging. I 100% agree that the pan sizes aren’t super small, but it is just that the packaging is minimal compared to what we’re normally used to seeing in the beauty world!

  2. I don’t really mind fallout etc as long as the shadows apply well and look good throughout the day on my eyelid! A messy palette is annoying but it’s a small price to pay for a good eyeshadow formula. Great review! x

  3. This palette looked much better than I was expecting. At a glance, I thought it looked quite boring, but your swatches convinced me otherwise. I love the silver shade the most – it’s so pretty. I bet you can create some beautiful looks with this palette! Thanks for sharing girl x

    1. This palette was a favorite of mine the last time I travelled because the colors are quite versatile even though they’re neutral shades and the pigmentation is AMAZING. ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. I actually didn’t know the price of the palette before this post but I’ve heard alot about it. I would say it is probably a little over priced for the product amount that you get. The swatches look so pigmented though which is amazing and so definitely worth it if they look that good x

  5. What a fantastic well written and in depth review! I do really like the look of this palette but feel a dark smokey look is definitely not my everyday so likely I wouldn’t get the use out of it. I have the mauve obsessions from the original set that launched and I do really like it. The size made me think it would be good for travel but due to the packaging and some of the really soft shimmery shades it gets really messy unfortunately! xxx

    1. ahhhhh thank you, girl. I love smokey looks like this, but totally fair to say that it isn’t your color scheme and it is def a little messy, but I do love the pigmentation. ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. The colors are pretty! Great for a smokey eye for sure. I’ve only tried lashes and lip products from Huda Beauty but I do want to venture out into their eyeshadow palettes.

    1. Thatโ€™s so interesting – Iโ€™m the opposite! Iโ€™ve never tried her lashes or lips, but want to!! Have you tried her bullet Lipsticks? Those intrigue me the most ๐Ÿ˜€

  7. Thanks for such an honest review! You never know until you try these products. I have yet to try these pallets, but so thankful for reviews like yours first, before purchasing.

  8. Oh my gosh, I thought I was doing something wrong because I was a mess using my Huda Obsessions palette. The shimmer shaded created so much fallout in their pans & all over my face so it’s nice to know you had the same problems. I do agree the formula is soft, easy to blend, very pigmented & long-lasting though! For $27, it’s really worth it, in my opinion. The pocket size is perfect, too!

    1. I agree for sure – def a messy palette but worth it when it comes to how it applies on the eye. I finally purchased one of the larger Huda Palettes so Iโ€™m excited to see how I like it compared to this formula. โ˜บ๏ธ

      1. You’re right, the way it applies & how long it lasts is worth the mess. ๐Ÿ™‚ Can’t wait to see which palette you bought & your thoughts on it!
