Yearlong Beauty Low Buy | Update #4 (August Recap)

Yearlong Low Buy | Luxury Makeup Flatlay | Anastasia Beverly Hills, Estee Lauder, Il Makiage, JD Glow, Nars, Shiseido, Tom Ford

I’ve been working hard to reign in my spending this year and to stop my beauty collection from expanding beyond control. Although some months have been more successful than others, I’ve been making an effort to reduce my hyper-consumerist tendencies. Please keep reading for my latest recap of my first Yearlong Beauty Low-Buy.

Low Buy 2019-20 Rules Recap

  • I cannot spend more than $75.00 on NEW cosmetics in a given month
    • Exclusions: haircare (I have a sensitive scalp), skincare, repurchases (if I have no suitable alternative ex. concealer)
  • Dollars not spent in a given month can roll forward, but cannot be pulled forward
    • Ex. If I want to buy a $90.00 eyeshadow palette in May, I cannot pull $15.00 forward. I would need to wait until June to buy the palette.
  • Exclusions: Items received via influencer networks, as gifts, or purchased via gift cards do NOT count against the dollar value

Low Buy Update #4: What I Wanted to Buy (but Didn’t)

List-making has been one of the ways that I’ve been successfully navigating this Low Buy. The below items are products that piqued my interest over the last three months:

Anastasia Beverly Hills x Jackie Aina Eyeshadow Palette (CF)

The Anastasia Beverly Hills collaboration with Jackie Aina is a stunning purple and pink-toned eyeshadow palette. In many ways, this palette looks like a sister palette to the Norvina and Modern Renaissance Palettes. I will buy this palette, but I’m holding off on purchasing it this month.

ColourPop – Orange You Glad? & Strawberry Shake Eyeshadow Palettes (CF)

When I first saw the Orange You Glad Eyeshadow Palette, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. However, the more reviews and demos that I saw on YouTube, the more interested I became in this palette. In contrast, I desperately want the Strawberry Shake Eyeshadow Palette… and many of the goodies in the collection. Funnily enough, once the hype died down so did my interest in picking up these two palettes.

Thinking of ordering from ColourPop for the first time? Please consider using my referral link for $5.00 off your first order. If you make a purchase, I’ll also receive $5.00 off my next purchase. Please note, I’ve purchased all of the aforementioned items.

Huda Beauty – New Nudes Eyeshadow Palette | $65.00 USD (CF)

Like the Orange You Glad Palette? from ColourPop, when the Huda Beauty New Nudes Palette came out I had little interest in this palette. Over time, the New Nude Palette has slowly captured my heart as I’ve seen close up photos, swatches, and demonstrations. I may ask for this for my birthday this Fall.

Il Makiage – Ready or Not Color Boss Pro Palette (CF)

I had to work hard to refrain myself from buying the Ready or Not Color Boss Pro Palette from Il Makiage. This grungy, purple palette just speaks to my soul, but the price is what really held me back on this.

Pixi Beauty – Glow-y Gossamer Duos | $18.00 USD each (CF)

I’ve been lusting after the Glow-y Gossamer Duos for months, but haven’t had any luck locating them in-stores at my local Target and don’t want to pay for shipping online.

Low Buy Update #4: What I Actually Bought

I started August with every intention of maintaining a strict month-long No-Buy, but once again let my anxiety get the best of me. Keep reading to see what I purchased.

Il Makiage x Carli Bybel Lipstick Collaboration (CF)

I had planned to hold off purchasing anything from the Carli Bybel x Il Makiage Lip Collaboration until the fall…. until I saw the brand post that the collaboration had almost sold out within two days of launching. In a panic, I rushed to buy the nude lipstick (Libra), liner (Luna), and gloss (Star Child) from the collaboration even though I was originally drawn to the red liner & lipstick duo (that already sold out).

Il Makiage restocked the collaboration at the end of September, which makes me question whether or not the line actually sold out or if the brand used scarcity tactics to encourage consumers to shop without pausing to think.

Estee Lauder & Tom Ford Mini Haul

I found Tom Ford and Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess products for 60% and 40% off, respectively, at the Cosmetic Company Outlet. I shrieked in delight when I saw the Tom Ford display. Although I have no issue splurging on quality makeup, Tom Ford’s line has been out of my price range due to the excessive price tag. Finding these makeup goodies at such a steep discount is what broke my August No-Buy. Once I made these purchases my self-control flew out the window.

I picked up: the Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Illuminating Powder Gelée in Heat Wave, Tom Ford Eye Color Quads in Nude Dip & Silvered Topaz (now discontinued), Tom Ford Soleil Glow Bronzer in Gold Dust, and the Tom Ford Cream and Powder Eye Color in Young Adonis (now discontinued).

Yearlong Low Buy | Luxury Makeup Flatlay | Anastasia Beverly Hills, Estee Lauder, Il Makiage, JD Glow, Nars, Shiseido, Tom Ford | JD Glow Galaxy Eyeshadows
JD Glow Galaxy Eyeshadows

JD Glow – Galaxy Single Eyeshadows (CF)

JD Glow is an amazing, Black-owned indie brand that I’ve enjoyed supporting this year. After seeing some breathtaking swatches from Hannah Louise Poston on YouTube, I was lusting for more JD Glow Galaxy shadows. I picked up the shades: Good Gawd, Opal, Sin,  and Unexpected.

Origins – Out of Trouble 10 Minute Mask to Rescue Problem Skin

I’ve owned quite a few tubes of the Origins Out of Trouble Mask because of how effective this mask works as a spot treatment for breakouts. Given that I am nearly done with my current acne-fighting mask, I felt that this was a good investment…especially knowing this mask was 40% off.

As a side note, I literally purchased all of the above in a single day. It was as if the Cosmetic Company purchase completely broke my sense of self-control. Also, once again, I was extremely anxious due to a challenging work assignment. During the wee hours of the night, I purchased the JD Glow & Il Makiage goodies during a bout of bad anxiousness.

Anastasia Beverly Hills – Luminous Foundation (CF)

Every YouTuber and their mother has been raving about the Anastasia Beverly Hills Luminous Foundation; however, as an oily-skinned gal, this foundation scares me. Nevertheless, I was intrigued to try this foundation due to the rave reviews. Would you be interested to see how this holds up against oily skin?

Huda Beauty – Desert Dusk Eyeshadow Palette (CF)

Of all my purchases this month, the Huda Beauty Desert Dusk Eyeshadow Palette is the only thing that I’m low key embarrassed to purchase. Although this palette has been on my radar since it released, I’ve always held back from purchasing it.

During the VIB Sale, the Desert Dusk Sale was on sale on top of the 20% off company-wide promotion. Given that Huda Beauty rarely offers discounts, I jumped at the chance to snag this palette at such a hefty discount.

Too Faced – Born This Way Super Coverage Multi-Use Sculpting Concealer (CF)

Although the Born This Way Super Coverage Multi-Use Sculpting Concealers are a slightly older release (compared to the Anastasia Beverly Hills and Urban Decay Foundations), I’ve heard rave reviews about these concealers. I’m currently working on testing out a bunch of hyped concealers. I wanted to try the Sculpting Concealer for months, so I figured the 20% off sale was a perfect time to do so.

Urban Decay – Stay Naked Weightless Foundation (CF)

Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Foundation is my favorite foundation, so I was immediately interested when I saw the promo shots for the New Stay Naked Weightless Foundation and Concealers. Since I am almost finished with my current UD foundation, I picked this up during the Sephora Sale.

Yearlong Low Buy | Luxury Makeup Flatlay | Anastasia Beverly Hills, Estee Lauder, Il Makiage, JD Glow, Nars, Shiseido, Tom Ford | Anastasia Beverly Hills Sultry Eyeshadow Palette
Anastasia Beverly Hills Sultry Eyeshadow Palette

Anastasia Beverly Hills Sultry Palette (CF) & NARS Sun Wash Diffusing Bronzer

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Sultry Palette & NARS Bronzers have been popping up at select Marshalls across the US, and I couldn’t resist the urge to pick these up at such a steep discount. Knowing that Marshalls never has the same products and sells through stock so quickly, I “had to” pick these two products up!

Planned Low Buy Budget for August: $00.00 USD

Total Spent in August: $343.00 USD

Low Buy Update #4 Takeaways: Sales Still Do Me In

I had every intention of maintaining a strict No-Buy when I started August and I held strong until mid-month when four big things occurred on the same day:

  1. I Found Tom Ford Makeup for 60% Off | Luxury makeup is a strange thing. While there are brands like Charlotte Tilbury, Pat McGrath, and Natasha Denona that command high prices, their product quality is typically worthy of the hefty price tags. Then, there are luxury brands like Chanel, Dior, Tom Ford, etc who are expensive purely because of their ties to the luxury fashion houses that own them. When I found Tom Ford goodies at such a steep discount I couldn’t resist the temptation to try the brand.
  2. Sephora Announced a Summer Sale | When images of the Sephora Summer Sale mailers leaked online, I lost it. The sale provided a convenient excuse to pick up the prestige foundations I’ve been eyeing since the promo shots launched. Do I need a foundation? No – I have a drawer full of mostly drug-store foundations. The sale gave me a chance to buy something I already knew that I wanted at a discount.
  3. A Limited Edition Sold Out | I have been eyeing the Carli Bybel x Il Makiage Collaboration since TrendMood started sharing sneak peeks on Instagram. To my dismay, this collection sold out within two days of being released so I jumped to order some goodies from the line…. even though the shades I really wanted were already sold out!
  4. Work Stress Got to Me | Hi, hello, I am an emotional shopper. The last products I purchased on my day-long beauty bender were the four Galaxy Shadows from JD Glow Cosmetics. I bought this while working through a particularly tough assignment.

I wish I could report that I didn’t buy any new makeup during the month of August – a would-be first for all of 2019, but I cracked under pressure. It was like I opened the floodgates this month when I made that first purchase. I’m planning to try a mini No Buy through October but will reevaluate during November… as there may be items that I want to pick up during the bevy of beauty sales during the holiday season.

  1. I feel so related to you when I read this post lol. August was a really bad month for me too, spending wise. I just didn’t have any self-control at all and discounts make me go crazy – I have to have it! So I totally feel you… really trying to get myself together this month though lol.

  2. So much good stuff here! That Hudabeauty palette was GORGEOUS and I totally would’ve bought it without hesitation because it’s so sparkly LOL. I get like that sometimes, I tend to buy some stuff in a bout of anxiousness and somehow that makes me feel better. It’s so hard sometimes! Nice low buy girl!

  3. I’m honestly finding it overwhelming that makeup brands are coming out with SO many palettes constantly.. How can anyone afford to have them all!? Such amazing picks on this one though and good luck for next month – you got this! x

    1. I def agree with you – I’m experiencing eyeshadow fatigue. I’d rather see less palettes, but higher quality and more innovative ones! At a certain point everything starts to look the same… like how many rainbow palettes does one person need??

  4. Firstly very intrigued what you think of the Anastasia foundation as a fellow oily skinned girl! I try so hard to do no buy every month but the odd few things always just call to me! It’s so interesting to see what you get! Stay strong this month for no buy! Xx

  5. I love the colors from the Huda nude palette. I am so in love with the shimmer of the shades!! I love the color of the Makiage lipstick! I found red being too strong sometimes, where something more muted is good. I love the haul that you got during August. Even though you spent more than anticipated, I say happiness is worth it.

  6. Eyeshadow palettes are my weakness so throughout the month of July/August I have been going hard on Colourpop. But I have also stopped purchasing everywhere else. Everything that’s been coming out lately is such a bore because I already own something similar, but it keeps me at bay, so I’m not complaining😁 Great post by the way, love seeing what others haul! 💗

  7. Well, you bought some beautiful things, LP! I am an emotional shopper, too. For me, I have to find a replacement behavior for shopping and it’s SO HARD. Sometimes I shop for something else instead of my normal thing, so I have to watch that too. I just replace one shopping compulsion with another. I am working on it and so are you. ♥️

  8. The ABH & Huda palettes you held back on are gorgeous! Good job on resisting. 😉

That’s annoying about Il Makiage possibly using scarcity tactics to get people to buy faster… the lip glaze looks pretty & I did like their mascara when I tried it, though. Everything in the Tom Ford & Estee Lauder haul looks so luxurious & high-end! I don’t blame you for taking advantage of the deals! I also wouldn’t be embarrassed about the NARS & ABH pickups from Marshalls! I’m jealous you found them there. 😭

Super curious to hear how the foundations work for you & all about the hyped concealers you’ve been trying. 🙂 Thanks for updating us, LP! Always enjoy seeing what you don’t & do buy!

  9. I recently found your blog and I must say I really love this series! I’ve recently been trying to rein in my spending so I really love reading these kind of posts 🙂
