The Perfect Palette Tag

The Perfect Palette Tag | Favorite Eyeshadow Palettes

The Perfect Palette Tag is an OG Beauty Tag that was popular on YouTube nearly 5 years ago! This quick little tag has been done by everyone from NikkiTutorial and Tati to KathleenLights and Emily Noel.

I rediscovered this tag when Nicole from I Like It Sparkly brought this back from the YouTube Graveyard. Click here to check out her post. Although I wasn’t tagged, I knew immediately that I needed to do this tag myself! Believe it or not, I actually found this challenge rather difficult because I wanted to reference my Anastasia Beverly Hills Master Palette by Mario for nearly every question… but I restrained myself.

Please keep reading, if you’re curious for my thoughts on my perfect palette.

The Perfect Palette Tag - Palette Stack
Can you guess what palettes these are?

Best Packaging

Without a doubt, the ColourPop Sweet Talk Palette is the prettiest palette in my collection. The mix of girly, floral detailing with edgier, graphic details makes for visually stimulating packaging.

Honorable Mention: The Pinky Rose Exotic Peacock Palette is not only stunning on the inside, but it is beautiful on the outside too. I love the sharp contrast between the bold blue and purple eyeshadow hues and the vibrant, yellow packaging. Even though I don’t often opt to wear patterned clothing, I am drawn in by the flower detailing that covers the edges of the package.

Best Color Payoff

As a whole, I’m over face palettes and I don’t tend to purchase these types of palettes anymore. However, my Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champaign Collection Face Palette is a staple in my beauty collection.  All of the blush and highlighter shades in this palette are vibrant without being overpowering. Also, the colors included could work across a wide variety of skin tones because they’re pigmented, but buildable depending on how much product is applied.

Honorable mention: The Juvia’s Place Nubian Palette is an affordable, pigmented palette that is under-hyped in the beauty community. In fact, I’m actually surprised at all the hate this palette gets online from avid JP fans. The mattes and shimmers are intensely pigmented and require little work to create a beautiful, warm-toned look. Also, the fact that I tend to get compliments when I use this palette makes me love the shadows even more.

Most Versatile

Cliche but true: the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance is a versatile, warm neutral eyeshadow palette. Depending on my mood, I can easily create a bold, colorful pink or red-toned eye look or a completely neutral, brown look. The shade variety makes this palette ideal for both individuals who love colorful shadows, as well as individuals who play with only neutral shades.

I often reach for this palette when working with a palette that is missing key transition shades because it pairs well with countless other palettes. If you can’t tell by the beat up packaging, this palette is very well loved.

One negative aspect to this palette is that the colors can muddy together if too many shades are layered together, but overall, this is a palette that I’d recommend to both skilled makeup artists and makeup newbies.

Best for Traveling

The Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette has become my go-to travel palette. Although the color scheme is neutral, the shade variety in the palette enables me to create a mix of easy, classic looks for day-time wear and fully-glam looks for the evening. Also, the colors are easy to blend, pigmented, and last all day, which makes this palette ideal for a variety of climates and situations. Plus, this palette is pocket-sized.

One comment is that the shadows are quite soft, so if traveling with this palette, be sure to keep it in the plastic sleeve.

Biggest Regret

I regret purchasing a few of my current eyeshadow palettes, but two, in particular, stand out to me. First, the Natasha Denona Mini Lila Palette…. too expensive for poor pigmentation and no staying power. This is one of the worst palettes I’ve had the displeasure of using.

The Viseart Grande Pro Volume I is another palette that I regret purchasing. Is the quality fine? Sure. But at the end of the day,  I regret investing $120.00 USD into a palette that I don’t feel WOW’d by or inspired to reach for on a consistent basis.

Best Color Names

Although the ColourPop x Disney Villains Misunderstood Palette was a contender for the best packaging, this eyeshadow palette has some of my favorite shade names. I love that each shade name directly ties to a classic Disney cartoon. In particular, I love that the shade No Spots” is a matte white, while the shade “101” is a sooty, black.

Honorable mention: The Sweet Talk Palette has such cute, flirty Spring-themed names and I love them. However, the Disney-lover in me needed to celebrate the Misunderstood Palette.

Least Used

My least used palettes are the Anastasia Beverly Hills Prism because I’ve LITERALLY never used it in the nearly two years that I’ve owned it. In all honesty, my 2018 Pan that Palette Challenge is partly to blame, but if I don’t use this palette soon, I may just sell it.

Most Used

Is it cheating to list a custom-made palette? My custom ColourPop Palette is easily one of my most-used eyeshadow palettes even though the shadows are all shimmer shades. I reach for this palette whenever I’m looking for a shimmery, metallic pop that will enhance my eyeshadow without overpowering the look I’ve already crafted. Also, given the fact that I’ve hand-selected each shade, it makes sense that I would reach for these colors so frequently.

ColourPop is super affordable, but I suggest waiting until one of their BYOP (Build Your Own Palette) sales before investing in a ton of their single shadows.

Most Loved

I could have easily listed my beloved Anastasia Beverly Hills Master Palette by Mario for nearly every option (*cough, cough: best color payoff, most versatile, best for traveling, most used), but that would have been hella boring. However, when I thought about it, there is no palette in my collection that I love more than my Master Palette.

Although at first glance, the color scheme may appear boring, it is a perfect, grungy neutral palette. The colors are versatile enough that this palette can be used to create effortlessly glamorous, smoked-out looks and easy, everyday eye looks. In my humble opinion, this is the best eyeshadow palette that Anastasia Beverly Hills created. I die a little inside whenever I watch an Eyeshadow Palette Collection or Declutter where someone verbally or physically trashes this palette.

As always, I love posts like this because they’re eye-opening in the way that they make me more self-aware of my preferences. I honestly wanted to list my ABH x Mario Palette for nearly every single category…likely because I know the ins-and-outs of this palette. Even though I may love eyeshadows and eyeshadow palettes, this tag has shown me that I need to slow down my purchases because I’m buying new palettes with such speed that I’m not getting a chance to fully vibe with each palette. Right now, it feels like I’ve been speed-dating my makeup.

Rather than specifically tagging anyone in this post, I’m calling all beauty-lovers to participate in this tag if it speaks to you!

  1. I loved reading through your palette choices for each category and seeing the inside/outside of each, LP. This was informative and super fun! I am impressed with how much you are using your palettes overall, even though I know that one is untouched (so many of mine have been untouched because I tend to hoard them). I think we’ve talked about this before when you posted one of your challenges to use what you have. ♥️

  2. I love the idea of this tag! How cool to see how abused your ABH palettes are like you REALLY love them haha. I’m so sad I don’t own the ABH x Mario palette though… it’s gorgeous!

  3. Oooh, I would agree with you about the ColourPop Sweet Talk Palette being nicely packaged! It is always nice to see collabs working out really well. The colors in the palettes look really nice! You get a good variety that you can blend into as well. It is a bummer that the Viseart palette wasn’t worth the money. Though that is expensive! Your Anastasia palette is definitely loved!

    1. The Viseart Palette def turned out to be a dud for me, but I’m happy to have at least tried the formula! And the Sweet Talk palette really has been such an easy, go-to staple for creating light, spring looks! 🙂

  4. This tag definitely speaks to me! I have added it to my ‘to-write’ list! You MR looks soooo used – I am surprised that you haven’t hit pan.

    1. OOOH can’t wait to read about your fave palettes!! Really love seeing the palettes that others treasure. ABH mattes are so hard for me to hit pan on!!! I know I’m prob the only person on the planet who thinks that but I struggle so hard with those pans.

  5. WOW, girl……. *Heart eyes* Your love for makeup is truly reflected in every single post. I especially enjoyed reading this post. I loved almost all of these palettes and want them now!!!! I’m really interested in trying the Nubian palette by Julia – I love the packaging, the shades and your review on it.

    Much love always,
