Back-in-Time Beauty | L’OREAL True Match Foundation Review

l'oreal truematch foundation review and swatches

Whenever a new beauty product launches, within a matter of weeks the beauty community determines whether that launch is a “holy grail” staple or whether the product is a fail. But have you ever noticed that new releases are slowly forgotten, regardless of whether they’ve earned cult classic status or whether they were an utter fail?

In my new series, “Back-In-Time Beauty,” I’ll be rediscovering old cult classic beauty staples and determining whether these goodies can actually stand the test of the test of time or whether they were an overhyped release that will eventually fade into obscurity.

For my inaugural post in this series, I’ll be reviewing the L’OREAL True Match Foundation. Please keep reading for more on this OG drugstore foundation staple.

Foundation Claims

  • 45 shades across 3 undertones (warm, neutral, cool)
  • Hydrating formula with a natural finish
  • Medium coverage
  • Pure color pigments match wearer’s unique skin color and undertones
  • Lightweight, oil-free, non-greasy formula that won’t clog pores

Foundation Price & Packaging

In the U.S. the True Match Foundation retail price varies drastically from retailer to retailer, with chains like target selling the Famous foundation for $5.79 USD while Ulta sells the product for $10.99 USD. The foundation is subject to further price fluctuations due to the highly discounted and promotional nature of drugstore beauty.

Although the small packaging is friendly for travel, the L’OREAL True Match packaging is a total fail because it is hard to get out the right amount of foundation without wasting product. I wish that L’OREAL would repackaging this foundation to include a pump, an applicator, or a squeeze tube instead of a bottle.

Selecting My Shade In-Store

One of the biggest hurdles that consumers face when selecting a foundation shade in-store at the drug store is finding the correct shade without being able to test product. The shade selection process can become even more burdensome when there is a wide variety of shades in slightly nuanced variations.

Although I knew my undertone (neutral), I struggled to land on a shade. To help me select my shade, I used some other drugstore classics as a reference point – Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless (120) and the Wet n’ Wild Photo Focus Foundation (Soft Beige). The below photo shows the TrueMatch foundation swatch compared to my other foundations.

Foundation Application & Wear-Time

The True-Match Foundation is a watery formula that I find is best applied with the fingers or a sponge. This foundation provides a solid, medium coverage and gives the skin a beautiful, healthy looking glow immediately upon application. Whenever I wear this foundation I receive compliments on how even and radiant my skin looks.

Although the foundation applies beautifully, this is not a long-lasting foundation. No matter how I set this foundation, my skin starts to look shiny and greasy within 6-8 hours of wear. A blotting sheet will quickly absorb the excess grease without altering the look of my base makeup.

It is true that this foundation does not clog pores or feel thick or heavy on the skin. Moreover, this foundation plays nicely with other powder, cream, and liquid products layered over the top (or underneath). Finally, I want to call out that this does dry down a little darker than when it is initially applied.

Final Thoughts

Despite my issues with the wear-time, I fully understand why this foundation is a cult classic: the line has a wide shade selection, provides a beautiful, natural finish, and helps the skin to appear more radiant.

This foundation would be best suited for individuals with normal skin, but oily individuals (like me), can make this work for shorter periods of time. I will consider repurchasing this foundation again because of how beautiful this looks on my skin.

    1. Hah – I’m excited for this! I think sometimes we (especially me) gets so swept up in the hype of new releases that we forget about some older, classic products. Was glad to report that this is a very good drugstore option . 💜

  1. My mom has used this foundation for forever and swears by it — it was the very first ‘big girl’ makeup product I owned. Although I haven’t used it in a while, it is really good. I swear by the True Match Lumi formula and Pro Glow! Thanks for reminding me of this! xoxo

      1. lol so I didn’t like anything about the foundation sadly – it wasn’t matte, wasn’t full coverage, and wasn’t long wearing no matter how I used it or set it on my face ☹️

  2. Such a good idea for a series, the possibilities are so vast! I never used True Match but my ride-or-die for years was Maybelline’s Dream Matte Mousse, though I haven’t used that one for a good 8-9 years now.
Current fave, actually has been since about 2014, is Illamasqua’s Skin Base, but drugstore-wise I reach a lot for Makeup Revolution’s stick foundation lately.
Looking forward to what you’re going to cover next 😊 x

      1. I swear by it because my skin can be quite fussy and it’s always been perfect, plus a little goes a long way which kind of makes the heavier price tag a bit better to bear! Let me know if you end up trying it, I do love an Illamasqua convert 😊 x

  3. This foundation sounds like it might suit me! I am always on the hunt for a different foundation. My go to has always been NYX however it now instantly makes my skin really dry and it sadly looks horrible now.
    Great review thank you!

    1. Aw thank you so much – and oh no!!! I hate it when products really stop working correctly. A hydrating primer may help to make the NYX foundation work better, but I really do love this foundation and think it is worth trying given how affordable it is! 🙂

  4. Its Interesting seeing reviews like this! I love products that have good wear time, but I find it really hard to find the correct shade. I think I need to go and get a foundation matched to my skin properly! I love foundations that don’t seem like they clog, but I do struggle with ones that go oily feeling! It always makes me feel like I’m shining!

  5. I love it when people bring back some throwbacks. Even though we want to work on innovating for the future, we still want to be reminded of some of the good things in the past that we might’ve forgotten about. The pricing is really good – the packaging definitely looks like a throwback, hehe. Even though the weartime isn’t the best, it still does the job. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  6. Haha is it terrible of me of not wanting to try foundations out based on their packaging? I hate foundations that doesn’t come with a pump because I always end up pouring out more than I need!

  7. I’ve never had a foundation bottle like this one but I did always wonder how people got the product out. It sounds difficult lol. Looking forward to seeing more posts & products from this series. 🙂

  8. I have never tried this before, but I want to try it now 😉
My favorite foundation is the Nilens Jord- Second Skin Serum Foundation! It is water based so I am not afraid of looking oily at all, and it just gives me a beautiful natural looking skin 🙂
