2018 Mid-Year Makeup Empties July 31, 2018
As part two of my Empties Review series, I will be sharing my thoughts on the cosmetic items that I finished this year. Between haircare, skincare, and makeup, I’ve finished the least amount of color cosmetic products.
During the first part of this year, I’ve finished 12 products – a mix of lip, eye, and skin products. Please keep reading for my thoughts on my Mid-Year Makeup Empties 2018.
Mid-Year Makeup Empties 2018 Roundup
Please keep reading for mini reviews of my 2018 mid-year makeup empties roundup. After finishing these products, I’ve gotten to know these items well.

Aquaphor – Healing Ointment (Chapstick)
I have no strong feelings about the Aquaphor Healing Ointment, which I use as a chapstick. The product is hydrating. Also, it helped to keep my dry lips from getting chapped during the cold winter, However, this product is essentially petroleum jelly.
Glamglow – Poutmud Wet Lip Balm (now discontinued)
The Glamglow Poutmud Wet Lip Balm was surprisingly awesome. However, I almost never tried this product. In fact, I nearly gave away the entire gift set that the balm came in. The Wet Lip Balm is exactly what it says it is – a lip balm that is so intensely hydrating that it gives your lips the appearance of looking like wet glass.
Chapstick – Gingerbread Kiss Chapstick
I received the Gingerbread Kiss chapstick in my stocking two Christmases ago. The product itself was great as a daily chapstick. More specifically, my lips felt soft and hydrated while using this balm. However, the sickly sweet smell was nauseating.
Buxom – Full-On Lip Polish in Dolly
Buxom’s Full-On Lip Polish* is the first full-size lip gloss I have ever finished. I enjoyed the formula. The plumping effect on my lips was noticeable. However, when I was first using gloss I felt a slight tingling effect. Thankfully, the more I wore this gloss, the more I grew accustomed to the sensation.
Also, the formula is high shine, but still plays well with other products. I found it easy to layer this gloss on top of other lip colors, no matter the shade of the lipstick or lip liner. Nevertheless, this is not a perfect gloss.
Buxom’s Full on Lip Polish is quite sticky. As such, there were quite a few incidences during my morning commute when my hair got stuck to the gloss during a windy moment.
Urban Decay – 24/7 Glide on Eye Pencil in Plushe (shade now discontinued)
The 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil* from Urban Decay is one of the creamiest eyeliner formulas I’ve tried. Also, the shade Plushe is quite pigmented. However, I thought it leaned more purple than navy when applied to the eyelids or waterline.
Although I enjoyed this eyeliner I am unlikely to repurchase at the full price. Overall, I typically buy more drug-store eyeliners. I don’t see a big enough difference in the performance of high-end eyeliners to justify continued purchases.
Sephora – Contour Eye Pencil 24 Hour Wear Mini in 33 Love Affair
The Sephora Collection Contour Eye Pencils are hidden gems. In fact, through trying different colors from this range, I determined that the formula is always pigmented and long-lasting. Love Affair* is a beautiful shimmery plum formula.
Kat Von D – Tattoo Liner Mini
The Kat Von D Tattoo Liner* is my favorite liquid liner. The brush tip applicator makes application easy. The formula is opaque black and does not bleed, crack, or smudge once applied. Additionally, the liner dries down quickly. The eyeliner stays in place all day without smudging or fading.
Urban Decay – Naked Skin Foundation (1.5 Fair Bisque)
When I set out on a mission to ween myself off of full coverage foundation, a crew member at Sephora recommended the Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation to me. However, at that time in 2016 I was too scared to use a formula that looked THIS skin-like. This was the lightest coverage foundation that I applied to my face in many years.
In the end, I ended up purchasing the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation. But, I was so frustrated by that formula. Still wanting to avoid full coverage foundation, I returned to Sephora to pick up the Naked Skin Foundation.
Out of all the high-end foundations I’ve owned, Fair Bisque is one of the closest shade matches I have found. My undertone is neutral, but when I’m at my absolute fairest, my undertone looks pink or peachy.
Formula-wise, the Urban Decay Naked Skin foundation feels ultra-liquid and lightweight. Nevertheless, oily-skinned individuals should still set their foundation lightly with powder or setting spray to increase the wear-time. However, the formula doesn’t crack apart or wear away after the oil sets in towards the end of the day.
As previously touched on, the Naked Skin foundation is light to medium coverage. For the most coverage, use dense brush. Use a damp blending sponge for the most natural, skin-like finish. Overall, when I describe this foundation to others I say that it is like ‘my skin but better.’ Discoloration and acne will peak through, but the foundation gives my skin a much more balanced appearance.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that individuals with mature skin may not love this foundation as much as I do. As mentioned, this foundation is extremely watery. Therefore, the foundation can settle into fine lines or wrinkles. However, a smoothing primer may reduce the likelihood of this occurring.
[July 2020 edit: Sadly, my beloved Naked Skin foundation was discontinued in 2020. Read my foundation ranking to see where this foundation (and others) land in my collection.]
Make Up For Ever – Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer (Travel Size)
The Make Up Forever Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer is an okay base. Honestly, I don’t have strong feelings about this product.
Although this primer provided a matte base, I didn’t feel like it extended the wear-time of my makeup. In fact, I saw no tangible difference between this primer and others in my collection. However, this primer does play well with other products and does not clog pores.
Final Thoughts on my Mid-Year 2018 Makeup Empties Roundup
Unsurprisingly, my 2018 mid-year makeup empties roundup significantly smaller than my haircare empties and my skincare empties. Overall, makeup is just much more difficult to work through. Even if I wear makeup daily, it is rare for me to wear the same exact products every day.
The above being said, the products that I finished in my 2018 mid-year makeup empties were items that I wore regularly. Items like foundation, primer, or eye products are far easier to finish compared to powder products.
