My Makeup Minimalism Journey March 13, 2018
As mentioned in my first blog post, I am continuing to work on my poor shopping habits and continue on my makeup minimalism journey. In 2017, my main focus was reducing the amount of clothing, accessories, makeup and skincare items that I brought into my home. Also, I worked at curating my current collection through decluttering, donating, or using up items (in the case of beauty or skincare purchases). My intention is to continue the makeup minimalism journey that I started in 2017.
My 2017 No Buy
For 4.5 months, I refrained from making any frivolous beauty or apparel purchases. In fact, my only purchase between January and April was a pair of black high-heels. These were only purchased after my sole pair of black heels broke.
Initially, the first month of my no-buy was difficult. However, as time went on, I found myself struggling less. Often times, the hardest part is just starting.
However, my motivation increased as I began to finish products in my beauty collection. At the start of 2017, my goal was to use up 50 products. Instead, I finished 122 items! (Roughly 2.5x my original goal). Additionally, I decluttered another 81 products.
Makeup Minimalism Goals
While my collection is smaller than it was at the start of 2017, I am by no means happy with the volume of beauty products I’ve amassed. Also, I am displeased with the amount of money I spent to accumulate all these items. Therefore, I set additional beauty inventory goals.
This year, my “achievable” goal is to declutter or use up 20% of my beauty stash. More specifically, my aim is to use up 40 products. However, my ”reach” goal is to use up 90 products.
In theory, using up 90 products should be an easy feat given that I used up or decluttered more than 200 products during the previous year. However, the majority of the items I finished were deluxe size samples that accumulated as the result of my beauty subscription services. Additionally, I finished the bulk of those samples last year. Therefore, I anticipate that I will encounter more difficulty as I try to use up 90 products.
Why Should YOU Makeup Minimalism Journey?
Many beauty addicts with large collections fail to realize that makeup expires. And it expires more quickly than we think it does.
Holding on to chests of makeup and skincare products we AREN’T using will not preserve the life our unused products. Instead, those products will continue to deteriorate and expire at the same rate. Makeup decays with age. Not only is this a waste of resources, but it is a financial waste, too.
Final Thoughts on my Makeup Minimalism Journey
While my collection is far from minimal, I am working towards owning a much smaller stash. By limiting my purchases and using what I own, I will hopefully decrease my carbon footprint. Also, these actions will hopefully minimize my feelings of regret or unhappiness caused by wasted goods. Finally, I hope that by breaking my obsession with buying new products, I’ll have more money to spend on activities that contribute to a more well-rounded lifestyle.
